I am not a fan of some of the answers to questions like these, as they seem like conspiracy theories, most of which are nonsense.
Some people claim Putin, President Xi or his family or the Saudi Royal Family:
The reasons why I am skeptical is this:
- There is no strong proof. There is proof of corruption, but not that the wealth is the highest in the world apart from if you speak about the whole families
- A lot of things about tax evasion is now a myth. If you want to open up an account with any financial institution, the CRS and FATCA means information is shared. If you are a political exposed person (PEP)
- Due to the traceability of transactions now, the money which is in corrupt leaders bank accounts is known.
- If people (like corrupt leaders) are using hundreds or thousands of friends to hide wealth, this is hard to prove, and as they would need to rely on these friends to give them the wealth back when they need it (which is unlikely if there is a coup in the country) you can't really say it is their wealth if it is in the name of friends and associates, many of whom are shallow
What is interesting though, conspiracy theories aside, historical figures have been wealthier than the current crop, in inflation adjusted terms:
Some much for the richer always getting richer.
